Diatomaceous earth or DE for short, is made from the fossilised remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. Their skeletons are made of a natural substance called silica. Silica is very common in nature but lacks in an indoor growing environment, so supplementing with silica is extremely beneficial. As well as a high silica percentage it also contains many essential trace minerals including phosphorous, selenium, calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, copper, zinc and iron.
But thats not all!
Diatomaceous Earth has been used as an all natural, chemical free pesticide/insecticde since the 1960s.
How does it work as a pesticide?
Diatomaceous earth is not poisonous; it does not have to be eaten in order to be effective. DE causes insects to dry out and die by absorbing the oils and fats from the cuticle of the insect's exoskeleton. Its sharp edges are abrasive, speeding up the process. It remains effective as long as it is kept dry and undisturbed.
Effective for sucking & chewing pests such as thrips, mites, mealy bugs and fungus gnats.

Diatomaceous Earth Powder - 500g
DE can be used dry, by simply brushing, sprinkling or puffing onto your infected plant. TIP: Sprinkle Diatomaceous Earth with a salt shaker for easy application.
You can also use it in a spray form by mixing it with water and spraying onto your infected plant. DE is only effective when dry however, so you will have to leave it on the plant until it is dry, then wait a week or so before washing or wiping it off (or until there are no more visible signs of pests)
One tablespoon per litre of water is ideal for pest spray.
